Bu öğretilerin bir öğretmen ile bir ya da iki öğrencisi arasındaki özel, samimi konuşmaların kayıtları olduğu söylenir. Olaylar, Roma İmparatorluğu dönemindeki Mısır'da geçiyordu. Bu kişiler, Yunan felsefesi ve özellikle dönemin Platonculuğu konusunda bir miktar eğitim almış, ancak yalnızca ortodoks felsefe okullarının kesin dogmalarını kabul edip tekrarlamakla yetinmeyip, Platoncu doktrin temelinde kendi gereksinimlerini daha iyi karşılayacak bir felsefi din inşa etmeye çalışıyorlardı.
