- Tarih: 1 Ocak 1921. Yeni bir yılın ilk sabahında İstanbul'a kar yağmış ama pek tutmamıştır. Yol kenarlarında ve Çamlıca tepesinde beyazlıklar göze çarpıyor. Sirkeci'den demir alan bir vapur pamuk balyalarıyla dolu olsa da, asıl yükü direnişe katılmak için Anadolu'ya geçen Kuva-i Milliyecilerdir. Vapurda dört de şair vardır: Yusuf Ziya, Faruk Nafiz, Vala Nureddin ve Nazım Hikmet. Kız Kulesi'ne doğru yaklaşıldıkça Nazım'ın yüreğindeki korku da büyür. Çünkü, Kız Kulesi işgal yıllarında İngiliz askerleri tarafından Boğaz'dan geçen gemilerin kontrol edildiği bir karakol olarak kullanılıyordu. Vapur, Kız Kulesi'ne gelindiğinde motorlarını durdurur. Oysa, pamuk balyalarının üstüne yatan direnişçiler ne kadar soğukkanlı görünmeye çalışsalar da, yürekleri yüksek devirli bir makina gibi atmaktadır. Kız Kulesi'ndeki arama üstünkörü yapılır vapura geçiş izni verilir. Nazım, Boğaz'a demirli işgal gemilerinin arasından yol alan vapurun küpeştesinden giderek küçülen Kız Kulesi'ne bakıp, derin bir nefes alır. Yeni yılın ilk günü Nazım Hikmet'i Anadolu'ya taşıyan vapurun adı Yeni Dünya idi. Ve, eğer sorulsaydı Nazım'ın İngiliz askerlerine göstereceği sahte kimliğinde şu yazılıydı: Yumurta Tüccarı!.
