Balıkçılardan biri dibine kadar soğurduğu, neredeyse parmaklarını yakacak izmariti balgamıyla birlikte denize savurdu. Sarma sigara bir soytarı gibi taklalar attı, geminin yan cephesinden sekerek suya düştü. Adamın tüm bedeninden, insanın burnunun direğini kıran bir içki kokusu geliyordu. 21. yüzyılın eşiğini geçeli henüz 8 yıl olmuştu ki Japonya'da mucizevi bir gelişme yaşandı. Geçen yüzyılın ilk yarısında, daha somut bir ifadeyle 1929'da yayımlanmış bir proletarya (işçi sınıfı) edebiyatı eseri yeniden keşfedildi. Neredeyse 80 yaşında olan bu eser o kadar müthiş bir enerjiye ve canlılığa sahipti ki muazzam bir ilgi gördü, yazarı Kobayaşi Takici (1903-33) adeta 21. yüzyıl Japon edebiyatı mozaiğinin önemli bir parçası gibi düşünülür oldu.
