- David Hume (1711-1776): İskoçyalı filozof ve tarihçi. 12 yaşında kaydolduğu Edinburgh Üniversitesinde hukuk eğitimi alsa da, felsefenin büyüsüne kapıldığından eğitimini yarıda bıraktı. İlk eseri Treatise of Human Nature 1739-1740 yıllarında yayımlandı. 1748 yılında ünlü soruşturmalarının ilk versiyonu olan Philosophical Essays Concerning Human Understanding eseri yayımlandıysa da pek ilgi görmedi. Kütüphane müdürüyken yazmaya başladığı altı ciltlik History of England eseri, felsefi eserlerinden çok daha fazla başarı ve ün kazanmasını sağladı. İktisat konulu denemeleriyle başta yakın dostu Adam Smith olmak üzere liberal iktisatçılar üzerinde de etkili oldu. David Hume, Locke'un ampirizmine, Berkeley'in idealizmine dayanan felsefesiyle, başta Kant olmak üzere kendinden sonraki pek çok filozofu etkilemiştir. İnsanın Anlama Yetisi Üzerine Bir Soruşturma Hume'un ilk eserinde incelediği konuların keskin ve açık bir özetini yaptığı, fikirlerin kökeninden özgür iradeye, nedensellik ilkesine dair şüphelerden, mucizelere kadar en ünlü argümanlarını formüle ettiği ustalık dönemin en yetkin eseridir. Ferit Burak Aydar: İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı mezunudur. Aralarında Edward Said, V. İ.
