- For many people in prison, access to teachers, structured classes, or even a quiet space for learning is limited. But one powerful tool is always available—the ability to think, reflect, and write.I know this firsthand. My name is Michael Santos, and I served 26 years in federal prison. During my sentence, especially while confined in the Special Housing Unit (SHU), I needed a strategy to keep my mind sharp and my focus forward.
