Ce livre est la version poche de la première monographie consacrée à Balenciaga par les Éditions du Regard en 1988. Marie-Andrée Jouve, alors responsable des archives de la maison Balenciaga réalisa à l'aide d'une documentation exceptionnelle un ouvrage inégalé à ce jour sur le maître incontesté de la haute couture. Elle fut à l'origine de sa redécouverte par une série d'expositions prestigieuses, entre autres : Balenciaga, Musée des textiles de Lyon ; Balenciaga, F.I.T. New-York. Secret, Cristobal Balenciaga le fut incontestablement, mais s'il ne nous livra que très peu de lui-même, de sa vie privée ou de ses choix artistiques, ceux-ci transparaissent dans son œuvre exigeante, parfois proche de la sévérité et dans laquelle culmine le raffinement de ses inspirations. De l'ampleur et des drapés de la peinture de Zurbaran, Balenciaga réinvente des robes, des manteaux et des capes dont chaque volume, chaque plis, atteint l'expression même de l'austère élégance espagnole. La perfection de sa technique lui permettant de satisfaire son goût pour l'infiniment dépouillé et d'obtenir des vêtements dont la coupe parfaite s'alliant à la somptuosité des étoffes, évoquent des architectures proches de l'abstraction. Ses plus belles créations (1937 – 1968) nous sont offertes ici à travers une iconographie inédite par les plus grands photographes de son temps qui, en reconstituant son œuvre, gardent intact le mythe.
