Format: DVD Mystery & Thrillers Editorial Review
**** "Black Cobra" emerges as a unique entry in the realm of low-budget martial arts cinema, featuring T.J. Storm in a lead role that showcases his potential as a serious martial artist. The film follows his character, a South African martial artist striving to liberate his father from imprisonment in the United States while encountering the complexities of the Japanese mafia. Despite its limitations, "Black Cobra" manages to inject humor into its narrative, contrasting serious undertones with moments of levity that are uncommon in similar films. However, the production quality has drawn mixed reactions; while some viewers appreciate the comedic elements and character development, others highlight a lack of cohesiveness in the script, citing a monotonous pace and subpar fight choreography that fails to impress. Critics argue that comparisons to action giants like Jackie Chan or Donnie Yen set an unapproachable standard for this film. Yet, T.J. Storm's authenticity in martial arts does shine through, offering a glimpse into his abilities, albeit at a noticeably different pace than more seasoned performers. The supporting cast, especially Cary Tagawa as the Yakuza antagonist, does seem to elevate the film, even if their contributions don’t fully compensate for some of the acting deficiencies noted. Overall, "Black Cobra" finds its niche among B-movie enthusiasts who seek entertainment over cinematic perfection. It stands as a testament to what can be achieved within a limited budget while revealing potential for the actors involved, particularly Storm. **
